about

The fourth studio album by The Cambrian Explosion, ‘Echoes of Australis: The Forgotten Music of Felix Ookean Vol. II’ recreates the soundtrack to a fictional 1977 documentary series produced by eccentric nature documentary maker and composer, Felix Ookean. An eclectic trip through late-20th century Australiana and musical esoterica, the album weaves a tapestry of wide-ranging influences, genres and timbres. Nods to 20th century minimalists, Enya-esque synthscapes, world music facsimiles, field recordings, and spoken word conjure a portrait of an artist hellbent on leaving no sonic niche unexplored.

After a six-year hiatus for 'parenthood and general life stuff' following the release of ‘Marine Theology’ in 2014, The Cambrian Explosion were resolute: 2020 will be our year. Needless to say, it wasn't the comeback the band had envisioned, with members instead trapped in their homes in Melbourne under one of the strictest pandemic lockdowns in the world.

Necessity being the mother of invention, ‘Echoes of Australis’ was written, recorded, produced and mixed remotely. Surprisingly, this resulted in perhaps the most free-flowing collaboration in The Cambrian Explosion’s long history. The album revisits a conceptual space the band explored exactly ten years earlier, functioning as a sequel to ‘The Forgotten Music of Felix Ookean’, released via Bandcamp in 2011. Ookean’s unique perspective provided a fixed point that would tie the new pieces together both in concept and tone.

Echoes of Australis is the prequel to Isolated Continents: The Forgotten Music of Felix Ookean Vol. III (cambrianexplosion.bandcamp.com/album/isolated-continents)
