about

Lark Quarry Stampede is the first single off the forthcoming fourth studio album, 'Echoes of Australis (The Forgotten Music of Felix Ookean Vol. II)' by Melbourne band The Cambrian Explosion.

A microcosm of the album it presages, Lark Quarry Stampede is a seventies synth epic, led by the saz - a microtonal stringed instrument used in traditional Turkish music.

While largely forgotten at its time of release, Ookean briefly made headlines in 1993 when he launched a bid to sue Steven Spielberg over superficial similarities between the Gallimimus stampede scene in Jurassic Park and a scene in Ookean’s earlier work soundtracked by Lark Quarry Stampede. While Ookean was unsuccessful in securing compensation for legal costs incurred--leading to his third declaration of bankruptcy--he did force John Williams to remove all saz parts from the Jurassic Park soundtrack.

'Echoes of Australis' is an instrumental concept album recreating the soundtrack to a 1977 documentary series produced by eccentric Australian nature documentary maker and composer, Felix Ookean. An eclectic trip through late-20th century Australiana and musical esoterica, the album covers a huge amount of stylistic ground, incorporating nods to 20th century modern minimalists, Enya-esque synthscapes, world music facsimiles, field recordings, and spoken word.
